Junior Firefighter Program
Montgomery Twp. Volunteer Fire Co #2 has a Junior Firefighter Program! This program offers teenagers ages 16-18 the opportunity to participate in the fire company in many different aspects. Junior Firefighters will respond to fire and other emergency calls, attend training, participate in Fire Company events and meetings, and much more! Many of our Active Interior Firefighters and Officers started out in the fire service as junior firefighters! Even our current Fire Chief, George Gurzo, started out as a junior firefighter here at station 46.
As a Junior Firefighter, you will have the opportunity to attend Firefighter 1, at no cost to you, immediately upon your 18th birthday, offered through the Somerset County Emergency Services Training Academy (SCESTA) in Hillsboro, NJ. SCESTA has state of the art training facilities and some of the most experienced and knowledgeable instructors around. Prior to beginning Firefighter 1, Junior Firefighters at Station 46 participate in monthly training with the rest of the Fire Company, monthly business meetings, work sessions, and fundraising events. As a company we have recently trained in patient packaging with use of a litter (rescue basket), brush fires, radio communication, emergency scene size-up, use of Self Contained Breathing Apparatus (SCBA), and vehicular extrication. As a result of the extensive training our Junior Firefighters are exposed to, the vast majority enter Firefighter 1 with confidence and are able to pass the course with high marks. As a Junior Firefighter, you are not expected or required in any way to be perfect. You are however, expected to ask questions and learn as much as you can from the highly experienced and professionally trained Firefighters and Driver/Operators that make up our roster.
The time commitment for a junior firefighter is not less than an interior firefighter. However, we fully understand and encourage that our Junior Firefighters' most important responsibility is to honor family commitments, and fulfill all of their academic requirements. As a Junior Firefighter, you will NEVER be required to miss school or any academic event. Much in the same way our Interior Firefighters, Driver/Operators, and Fire Police are not required to miss work or neglect their family obligations.
If you are interested in joining the Montgomery Township Volunteer Fire Company # 2 as a Junior Firefighter, or would like more information, we would love the opportunity to meet you and discuss any questions or concerns you or your parent or guardian may have. The Membership Committee will guide you through the application process and make sure you have everything you need to succeed in the program. We invite you to join us on any Wednesday evening at 7 pm, or email the Membership Committee Chairperson, Dan Campo, at [email protected].
The Fire Station is located at 529 Rt 518 Skillman, NJ 08558
